The Apothecary

Behind These Veiled Doors
The year 2023 marks the first time the Apothecary is open to the mortal public. However, the Apothecary has been open for nearly two centuries-a true haven for the nocturnal. In addition to a place to get cures for most ailments, like other apothecaries in their time, became a place for visiting, getting a blood bag and socializing. The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, located at 514 Chatres Street was the first (mortal) apothecary in the United States, circa 1823 and had the country’s very first licensed pharmacist, Louis J. Dufilho Jr. Pharmacies and Apothecaries were the predecessors of cocktail bars, as they had soda fountains that both men and women could visit. At the time women were not allowed in drinking establishments, so they quickly found themselves socializing over a soda at the local pharmacy. Vampires befriended both pharmacists and barber surgeons as a civilized way of obtaining blood, as most barber shops and pharmacies were a place where one could have teeth pulled, small surgical procedures performed and blood letting.
Vampires found socializing with mortals enjoyable, but the need for our own apothecary became apparent quickly, and Boutique du Vampyre’s Apothecary was opened in 1849. Now with the familiarity of vampires, through all forms of media, we felt it was time to open to vampires and mortals alike. Come sample our wonderful recipes for hydrating, blood cleaning and rejuvenating. We know mortals must eat food from land and sea, so we also offer a fine selection of delightful cuisine to suit the daywalkers’ palate.
