beneath the velvet shroud

Hexed Miami, the curators of South Florida’s goth and industrial underworld, crafted an experience that transcended mere gathering. Their unrelenting devotion to the scene was on full display, weaving together a night of live performances, shadowed rituals, and dance floor transcendence that left all who attended thirsting for more. With an eye toward authenticity and a heart soaked in black velvet, they brought together a lineup that honored gothic tradition.

Bar Nancy

goth night

On the evening of Saturday, April 26th, 2025, the vibrant heart of Miami beat black as Hexed Miami summoned the creatures of the night to Bar Nancy, a refuge hidden along 2007 SW 8th Street. The evening promised a gathering of black-clad souls, and what unfurled was a night of pure, unrelenting magic. The city’s restless spirits found sanctuary—a night devoted to darkness, music, and the eternal communion of the gothic soul. The atmosphere was electric yet intimate, a congregation of true believers dressed in black lace, leather, and mystery.

Obsidian

The evening began with the raw power of Obsidian, a force born from Fort Lauderdale’s own brooding heart. Fronted by the enigmatic Missy Mortis (Vocals/Guitar), Obsidian summoned a storm of gothic rock, deathrock, post-punk, and dark wave. His voice—haunting and heavy with thunderous rage —cut through the air as his guitar coils writhed around every riff. Behind him, Danny Drums (Drums) pounded out rhythms that rumbled like distant thunder, each strike driving the band’s pulse forward with relentless momentum. To his left, Ryan Rivas (Bass) laid down thick, throbbing basslines that anchored the sound in subterranean depths, while Kathy D (Keyboard) wove spectral harmonies and pulsating textures into the mix. Her infectious energy wasn’t confined to the stage. At one point during the performance, Kathy D stepped off the stage and into the crowd with her keytar in hand as she wove between fans, nearly dancing alongside them. Each shimmering riff and graceful turn drew listeners closer, her gaze locking with every face she passed and forging an intimate connection as the music pulsed through the crowd. Their performance was a baptism in shadow—a fierce and beautiful offering to all those who live and breathe the darker arts.

Tears for the Dying Performance at Bar Nancy | April 26, 2025

Tears for the Dying

As the night’s closing act, Tears for the Dying stepped onto the stage with an electric presence. Hailing from Athens, GA, they blend goth gloom, post-punk edge, and deathrock ferocity into a sound all their own. Their sound—equal parts Bauhaus’ dusky atmosphere, 45 Grave’s relentless drive, and New Order’s hypnotic pulse—washed over the packed room. Original member Adria Stembridge wielded vocals, bass, and guitar, while Page Dukes’ guitar and bass lines carved deep grooves into the night’s flesh. Their set was a visceral sermon: jagged guitar riffs and pulsing bass lines underpinned Adria’s voice—equal parts lament and defiance—soaring above the raw intensity. Between songs, she reminded us that Bar Nancy stands as more than a venue—it’s our sanctuary, a place where kindred souls can gather, find refuge, and feel truly safe. Her impassioned call to resist injustice, discrimination, and creeping fascism felt less like a speech and more like a binding oath among comrades in darkness. By the final chord, the audience was left spellbound and yearning for more—proof that even in the blackest night, Tears for the Dying can kindle a spark of hope strong enough to unite an entire community.

communal pulse

In those moments between music and memory, the bands and their devotees became one, bound by the same pulse of hope and defiance that defined the evening. When each set concluded, both Obsidian and Tears for the Dying transformed their merchandise tables into sacred altars—every shirt, record, and trinket a cherished relic of the night’s dark rituals—signing mementos and basking in the communal energy they’d ignited. From before the first chords until long after the final echoes faded, behind the decks stood DJ Vampoisson from North Carolina and Miami’s own Shirl Legion, both masters of Nu Goth and Dark Wave, Post Punk anthems, and Coffin Classics. Their combined sorcery wove a seamless tapestry of shadowed rhythms—each track a dark invocation that bound ancient spirits to modern beats, compelling every soul on the dance floor to move as one in ecstatic abandon. And dance I did—swept away by the unseen currents that only the dark-hearted can hear. I have always loved to lose myself in the music, and that night, the beats, the melodies, the atmosphere—it all had me swaying like a restless vampire, gliding effortlessly across the dance floor. Every track spun by the DJs seemed to know the secret rhythm of my own heart, pulling me ever deeper into the black ecstasy of the night. For those who found themselves longing for more (and who among us wasn’t?), the good news is the shadows will soon return! Hexed Miami beckons you once again to the most anticipated event of the year: World Goth Day.
